Who doesn’t love free popcorn, free cotton-candy, and free music? Throw in a few vendors with bags, leather belts, phone accessories and beer and you’ve got yourself a party! Last night there was a party by the dorms and it was a lot of fun! So many languages within ear shot of each other and on top of the native speakers, plenty of people trying to practice another language. In the beginning, the music was okay…people were still showing up and the crowd was beginning to grow, but no one really broke away from conversations and starting dancing and singing to music. Then all of a sudden there was an international chorus of “Play that funky music white boy!” and everyone started dancing.
With all these different languages and language barriers, I couldn’t help but smile and be amused by how many people from other countries (not from the US) were singing along! The song came out years ago and for people my generation outside of the US to sing this song (well mostly the chorus) so well just had me laughing. It’s not that I don’t think more people should listen to music from other countries, don’t get me wrong, I just think it’s funny that it took an “oldie” to get people to start dancing and singing.
For the rest of the night, the “dance floor” was filled with people. It was so much fun. Personally, I don’t really like to dance and had more popcorn and cotton-candy than any one person should. But the dancing bug did find me and bite me and I was out there dancing for a while with everyone else. The night was definitely a great start to our semester and now I am more excited than ever to see what comes next!
